Cocktails
by Mr. Fox February 23, 2012 10:55The drinking culture is changing around the World and the vibrant and multicultural Copenhagen is not immune to this new sweeping trend. In the last couple of years one single word has become one of the main obsessions of the city’s night life: Cocktails.
Man’s infatuation with intoxication spirits is centennial. Reports of production and consumption go hand in hand with the evolution of mankind. Religious monks were already distilling Whiskey in the 12th century and middle age soldiers of several countries where often rewarded not with money but with booze rations. So, as most aspects of man kinds evolution, also the drinking desires evolved to a more refined and elaborated stage where the mixing of elements became central. The first documented use of the word Cocktail dates back as far as 1806 to identify a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters. This simple 200 year old definition is still a basic guide line to explain what a crafted drink is.
It’s quite common to hear that fashion is cyclical and if we take a deeper look at the art of crafting drinks that seems to fit like a warm winter glove. Over these last two centuries the art / business has gone through many ups and downs. Unlikely popular during American prohibition times, despised by 60’s hippies, brought back to life by the 80’s clubbing fanatics and Tom Cruise enthusiasts, frowned upon during 90’s dark grunge years, the Cocktail has been revived by the XXI century and it is seriously threatening to take over the world one city at a time.
It seems safe to say that Copenhagen is already one of the places claimed as Cocktail land. If 10 years ago you would have to look hard to find a decent establishment to ask for a Sour or an Old Fashioned, now days it’s almost impossible to avoid drinking cocktails. Bars, clubs, restaurants or even modern day hipster bodegas seem to find impossible not to create a cocktail menu to appease the growing thirst for the tasty colorful beverages. Copenhageners famous for their loyalty to the Gin & Tonic and the Fernet Branca shot are slowly and steadily becoming one of the most selective and enthusiastic crowd of this fine art.
As a result of this trend the cocktail scene is at an all-time high in the Capital of the Kingdom. World’s top 50 rated bars, internationally reputed Cocktail Bartenders, mixology and cutting-edge drink crafting techniques and Cocktails conventions like next weeks “Copenhagen Spirits and Cocktails 2012” (26 and 27 of February at Moltkes Palæ) makes Copenhagen one of the world’s most interesting places to be when it comes to fine drinking.
Stay tuned to find out where to go and what to drink.
